By The Way is a fantastic album. My favorite song is This Is The Place.

During Californication and By The Way Frusciante had come to feel that guitar solos were mostly self-serving affairs, which is why there aren't a ton of solos on these records. He had a change of heart before Stadium Arcadium and went full Hendrix on those records, which is why Stadium Arcadium is, for me anyway, a far superior effort than the aforementioned two albums.

By the Way has some good songs, but sound all too similar and its just too long. Not my thang.

Wet Sand and Gong Li are my two go-to RHCP songs to play recently.

I know this is quite egotistical, and certainly unpopular, but my “Stadium Arcadium Prime” mix might make for my favorite RHCP album.

That said, the album is very long, so as is my wont, I retracked it and have been enjoying my new version much more than the original form:

1. Can't Stop (How did they not open with this song considering that percussive intro?!)
2. By the Way
3. The Zephyr Song
4. This is the Place
5. Universally Speaking
6. Venice Queen (REALLY like US and VQ as a mid-album one > two punch.)
7. Throw Away Your Television
8. Minor Thing
9. Midnight
10. Dosed
11. Cabron

I love By the Way but agree that it’s just a little bloated. I’ve never pared it down myself, so I’m going to check this out. Sad to see Tear left off, but I’ll listen first before judging.

Its a logical extension of Californication and By The Way.

I’ve commented on this previously, but to paraphrase—It’s a solid double album effort (with a strong collection of b-sides), that I believe becomes an almost perfect record when trimmed down to about 60 minutes.

How is it gross?

Firing Josh was definitely the right call. I don't think he was ever a good fit for the band.

Frusciante may have a gigantic ego for expecting the band to go on hiatus if he didn't feel like playing guitar but he's also not wrong.

I found Josh to come across as quite unlikeable in both this and the Maron interview.

It sounds like he didn't have the foresight not to spend all the money he made in his decade or so being a Chili Pepper, which is pretty insane:

Quote:
You foresaw being in the band a lot longer.

At least for one more tour, right? Because we were through writing another album. I’ve never been good with money and I love spending it, but this time around, I thought, “Yeah, how much longer can this go on? These guys are getting older. It’s not like they like touring long… they don’t do it like they used to. This time around, I’m gonna be a little more responsible and put some [money] away” — doing all that stuff with your parents’ voices in your head. I don’t think along those lines — I’m such a child when it comes to that and I’ve always been that way and being in their band allowed me to be that way. And it was a beautiful thing. But I was getting older now. I’m 40, like, OK, maybe I should be a little more responsible. But at the end of the day, I was really looking forward to making one more record.

Yeah, like the five songs I cut. ;)

This one's great:

What I find gross — and have for the last ten years — is the way JK was brought into the fold, told to play JF’s parts exactly the way he had originally played them, and then made to contribute to two really bad albums. And hearing about the stuff with Rubin, and how JK had musical ideas that weren’t embraced, just makes him look like a hired gun more than he already did...

I never liked Josh’s contributions to the band. But it seems like the other three kind of took advantage of his naïveté and more quiet nature.

That aping of Frusciante's style is certainly part of what I find objectionable. I don't see how you can pin that on the other guys.

My assumption has always been that they just told him to play johns parts just like John used to play them...

Which would’ve been fine for the old material. But it was a bad look for the new records, and the interview makes it sounds like JK wanted to push the band in a different direction but they weren’t receptive.
