I think it’s the more even listen front to back. The best material from these sessions is on UL, but also the worst.

Like stadium arcadium I just pick about 6 -8 tracks to play from the sessions rather than try sit through the whole thing.

There’s no real consensus what the good tracks are so it’s great they complete so many songs each session

I prefer UL. Canteen seems more experimental but at the same time, it does not grab me as UL, which i consider one of their great albums.

In The Snow is really cool though. I love the chorus, the effect Kiedies has in the voice, the vocals too

I love In the Snow, La La La La La, and Cigarette Song. The only one of that style that I really hate is Not the One, which might be the worst RHCP song of all time.

I don’t see Not The One as being closer to those songs ; which are way more experimental in lots of ways.

I like NTO a little more since it came out; specially with what John is doing in the back but yes it’s one of those I don’t need to go often to.

There are a lot of more songs that I don’t care or like from them ; hell I would say the complete first album is unlistenable…but even going to by the way or SA; there is a lot of stuff there too.

Fake as Fu@k is so fucking good, from the melodic start closer to something from Californication to that bridge that sounds similar to something from the 80s with the horns and that ending that reminds me of One Hot Minute.

The band is so fucking tight

:bammer: Love it, definitely a highlight from these session. And yeah, the way some of these songs move from one part to the next…Seems like they didn’t try to “make things fit,” and didn’t try to adhere to any conventional song structures. They sound so inspired on these tracks. Would be perfectly fine with them retiring now, as I think history will be very kind to these two albums.

I dont want them to retire right now!! Make more music. Hell, the live show i saw last year was so good.

Also, the jam at the end of Roulette followed by the experimentation of My Cigarette, a song made with keyboards, electronic drums, and 80s sounds with a fucking solo trumpet is also super tasty.

Kinda feel we take Flea for granted because im more inclined to hear what John is trying to do, but he plays so many great stuff in both of these albums.

i was obsessed with the lost song "blender" from OHM sessions, even though from the description it was clearly going to be a pointless throwaway.

Then it leaked and it was exactly that, but i was happy.

Have you heard the stuff that got shelved before By the Way? And/or the Teatro sessions?

Yeah there’s so much good stuff from that time period that has leaked.
I like the BTW roughs with guide vocals, especially out of range. I have no issues with AK, but his vocals are a bit up front for my tastes these days.

Goldmine is another good one that sounds a bit like it’s only natural. But I think that’s from 2004 from memory.

Yessir

Teatro are a bunch of studio sessions thenorededed Californication, very loose and jammy

The pre-BTW stuff is much more hard rock/punk, it points at a different album that they abandoned
