I mean, I'm familiar with their sound on those 90s records but I don't know any of them by heart. I owned Hand it Over and of course Green Mind is a classic. Freak Scene from 1991: The Year Punk Broke is a killer performance. Yet I just don't live and breath this discography like I do some of their contemporaries (Sonic Youth, Pavement...)
Maybe it would help if someone would explain the band's dynamics to me? Just three guys, right? J, Lou and that drummer? Who writes the songs? Do these guys get along? Was there a "turning point" album within this band's discography that changed the sound or anything?

Yes (the drummer is Murph). That's the original Dinosaur Jr line-up that existed in the 80s, and later reunited circa mid 00s.

J mainly, but Lou also writes a few. He sings those.

They didn't used to, which is why the band split originally, but I think they do now.
Circa late 80s, Lou left the band, J and Murph carried on with other bassists. By the early 90s, Murph was out too. The band was more or less a J side project at this point, but he eventually mended fences with both Lou and Murph and they decided to pick things up and continue. This version of the band has now been pretty consistent again for 15+ years, so that's nice for everyone.

I think You're Living All Over Me, their second album, is close to being that.

I would recommend their first album with the original lineup back, Its called Beyond, and i fucking love it.
Gave Beyond a listen on a run a couple of days ago. I didn't realize I knew "Crumble" from that album so well. Not sure why I've heard it that often, it's not on radio around here or anything. Guess it just shows up on a lot of playlists. Enjoyed the album. Definitely the classic Dino Jr. sound that I'm familiar with.

yeah, its a great album! It was kind of a surprise back in the day not only that those guys were back together but that they manage to make a classic album with so many great songs.
I Got Lost remains as one of my favorite from their catalogue.

"This is All I Came to Do" stood out for me. Whole album is getting another listen very soon. When I'm on a run it all kind of bleeds together, but these guitars are good for that sort of thing.
