I don't like the letter that person posted. Seems very vague -- no explanation of the sorts of problems he's having, and "he can't work" isn't a sentence I can take at face value...
Shawn Smith is a terrific musician; I've loved watching him perform on numerous occasions. My experiences in the music biz have made me very skeptical; there are a lot of artists who fundamentally aren't willing to do other non-musical work, because they feel it interferes with their creative lifestyle, or are just embarrassed to be seen slinging coffee.
I wish Shawn all the best, and hope he gets whatever help it is that he needs. But I wouldn't donate a dime based solely on the strength of that letter.

Agree with everything trag said.
I'd imagine Shawn's story isn't that dissimilar from many musicians; there's not much money in it unless you're fortunate enough to find yourself in Pearl Jam or whatever. When I used to work in banking I helped process loans for some relatively well-known Australian musicians and I can tell you, with a few rare exceptions, the financial rewards are very modest.

A lot of go fund me pages can be a scam. Hopefully that is the case here. But it's true that it is an ugly business for modestly successful musicians when they get old.
