Found my cd of Wise Up Ghost, and fuck yeah the groove.
We were all pretty down on "Walk Us Uptown" back when this first came out but man do I love that song now. The whole record has held up really well, and is one of many I'm long overdue to revisit.

I've always found this band to be extremely vanilla.
I can understand this feeling, they have always had a bit of an English class vibe to them (especially on their first few albums, I'd say), but I just love Black Thought so much as a lyricist and ?uestlove so much as a drummer that the stuff in between is almost immaterial to me (literally in some cases -- one of my favorite Roots tunes is "Web," which is just drums and vocals and a tiny bit of bass). How I Got Over is one of my favorite records of the 2010's.

I was blown away with the album when it came out, then totally forgot about it. Found the cd and it was such a joy to listen to.
And yes, i could get why someone would think The Roots are vanilla these days, with them working with fallon. It wasnt like that back in the day...they seemed a really cool indie band that made hip hop and funk. They talked about politics. Questlove is one of my fav drummers from all time.
