When I say it's more commercial or accessible I'm not insulting the album. I'm saying something I think is self-evident and is being proven by the incredible sales/streaming figures coming out. Obviously everybody disagrees with my commercial/accessible statement, so it apparently isn't self-evident or even necessarily true. Maybe I'm really, really wrong about it.
But whether I am or am not, I'm not saying that to denegrate DAMN. or to argue that TPAB is better than it because it's more ambitious. They're different. And so far I think they're both great. I'm just saying I think the intention behind this album is very different and that part of it is to show that he can make the mega hit record, too. Yes, he's sold well in the past and critics love him, and huge numbers of hip hop fans worship him. But this album he's outselling/streaming Drake right now. Or at least on pace to. I think the ONLY argument I've seen in the last 2-3 years against him being the King is sales. And this album looks like it's dispatching that nonsense.
I feel like he's coming with a track like LOVE. to be like "I can do a Drake song better than Drake AND I can do DNA and XXX and TPAB and drake can't do any of that. This is his "The crown's been mine and now I'm taking away anything anybody can say to the contrary."
Further, when I say that this is a good album to blast in the car or whatever I said, that doesn't mean it isn't also of artistic value. This album is clearly better than TPAB for rolling down your windows and cranking it as loud as you can. I'm thrilled to have another Kendrick album like that. That's not an insult or a limit on it's use, it's just a difference I see between the two. Maybe I'm wrong about that too. Idk.

Was listening to this earlier and realized the bolded lyric kinda encapsulates what I was trying to say. This is a "put motherfuckers on notice" album.

Starting to get a clearer thematic handle on this album. It's really great. He's beginning to approach Kanye territory in the way he uses irony, contrast, and interconnecting narratives between songs to establish and clarify his themes. Wonderful stuff.
