The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
I'll be interested in your thoughts, trag. Like me, I think you'll have some things you disagree with. But a lot of that, I think, comes from a need to live with the record longer. Hopefully, you enjoy it despite potential disagreements.
I listened to it right after the Indiecast discussion of the record which was... yeesh. So, this was a welcome pallet cleanser after that.
I wouldn't say they hated it but they don't like it very much. Which is fine. The issue is that their analysis is terrible. I don't think I've heard anyone completely misunderstand a record the way Hyden does in that ep. Ian's takes are more interesting but very flaccid and hollow. Hyden is totally out of his depth. And Ian, despite making fun of how you don't need time to write a review of a record, doesn't have much to say about it because he clearly hasn't thought much about it because he hasn't had time to process it fully. It's weird.
It's fine that they don't like it. I think that's valid. The Rolling Stone pod doesn't gush about it, either. They each have a lot of issues but the conversation is thoughtful and nuanced. Not so with Indiecast. Hyden's take especially is cringier than any of the cringe on Mr. Morale.

Not ready to put this stake in the ground just yet, but I think I'll probably wind up cutting these tracks:

Crown maybe gets to stay? On the fence about that one. Everything else is definitely a keeper.
I’m cutting Crown and calling this a record. All killer, no filler…Not that any of these tracks I’ve cut are filler, per se. But they slow the momentum down, and in their absence the production is an exclusively beat-driven affair. None of the segues suffer either. I’ll listen to the cut songs on vinyl occasionally.

I can understand skipping the interludes. I'll probably end up doing the same at a certain point. We Cry Together is probably another I won't seek out when I'm not listening to the full record. Not because it's not an interesting/good song but because it's tough to listen to.
But no way am I dropping Crown. I fucking love that song.

Honestly not a bad question. My read on that one is that Black people have been cultured to hate their own physical appearance and that the masks offered them a respite? But I should sit with the lyrics instead of just listening and trying to cobble it together.

You can't be serious. The lyrics are about dropping the facade, a "mask off" moment.
