Still prefer Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, but Butterfly is the best album of 2015 by a fairly wide margin, so far.

"How Much a Dollar Cost" is probably my favorite track of the year. The album has a few down spots (I really wish the rap genre would impose a moratorium on interlude tracks), but overall I think it's a strong effort and a step forward from "Good Kid," if not as lean or singularly realized.

Yeah I don't get the interlude thing. I understand that it seams an album together as a story, but... those things go way overboard sometimes.

I think the interludes and overall theme was better on Good Kid.

For some reason, I tend to listen to rap albums in full.

The "interlude" stuff on "Good Kid" was never separated into individual tracks, which for some reason seems to matter. I will admit the bit with Kendrick's parents arguing on his voicemail is pretty funny.

"Good Kid" is definitely the more thematically coherent record. It's an album of intense focus, where "Butterfly" is the sound of an imagination running wild. Both have their virtues.

I still have trouble listening to either of these albums in full.

In general I agree, but For Free? (Interlude) is a pretty pivotal part of the album IMO. In fact, the last minute or so when he's doing his rap/slam poetry thing is one of my favorite parts of the album.

"For Free" is such a frustrating track for me -- I love it lyrically but Kendrick's vocal affectation just annoys the hell out of me. I can't stand to listen to it.

I bought this album on a whim last week. I don't buy rap records at all but I'm digging King Kunta. I like how this is put together.
