Well, you can quibble with its classification as an album rather than an EP, though at eight tracks and thirty-four minutes long, it's certainly well within industry standards for being considered a proper album. And isn't "Nebraska" basically an album of "demos?" I'm not really sure what you're taking issue with here.

After one listen, I think this is fantastic -- the perfect post-script to "To Pimp a Butterfly," though it certainly stands on its own as its own project with its own identity. I agree that some of the tracks feel more "casual" than others, but Kendrick's rapping absolutely does not -- it's as locked in as ever. People are almost definitely using the term "demo" incorrectly in regards to these tracks -- these do not feel like rough drafts put down for reference purposes with the intention of being revisited at a later date. They're thoughtfully produced and arranged, and sound great.

Interesting. Maybe the term means something different in rap music, but these don't sound like any "demos" I've heard, nor do they sound any less "finished" to me than the album tracks.
Either way, I just listened to it three more times, and I love it.

The term "demo" has changed a lot since the shift to ProTools et. al., but I think it's especially true for hip hop. There's often little difference between a work-in-progress track and a final release (witness the recent Kanye rollout), and I'd guess that the Kendrick tracks were conceived as "demos," and then he just said, "Fuck it, these are great the way they are, let's just release the without changing drum sounds, clearing samples, etc."
