I want to talk more about DAMN.. Why is this album so fucking good? For those who have lived with it far longer than I, what are your favorite moments and why do you think this album has resonated so much across a variety of audiences?

I personally could do without Blood, but I get why it's there and it serves its purpose. Outside of that minor quibble, this is a perfect album. All sorts of sound nuggets and cool production tricks are tucked into the simple, bold beats and hooks. Weird sounds, spacey flourishes, and other jazz and psychedelic elements sit comfortably on top of what are ultimately bangers: These are beats meant to rattle the subwoofers, but it's mixed so well that I can feel the depth and power of the low end even on my stock Subaru speakers.
The lyrics are mindblowing. Lamar is not just a rapper, he's a reporter on the frontlines of a world I'll never experience first-hand. He's also a poet, with his stories taking on a jigsaw puzzle-like complexity full of multiple meanings, references to past Kendrick songs, and more. He creates stories with fully realized characters that at once exist wholly on their own, and offer great commentary on larger social themes. And then outside of the lyrics, his voice, and his swagger, are so human and compelling.
Not a ton of guest features or skits to steal the limelight or muck up the flow.

I guess it has a lot of songs that appeal to different people...seems to have a really easy structure, with choruses, guest stars like rihanna or u2. Also, we cant forget about the marketing it had. Huge push from the label, other artists, etc...

Is that true? Did it have a huge marketing push? That's interesting. That stuff is way off my radar, so I feel like I didn't even really know about the album until after it had been out for a while.

i don't recall much marketing leading up to the album. he released a non-album song a couple of weeks before the release of the album that hinted at a new album release date.... which sent the internet and traditional media into a pretty huge frenzy. he basically made a countdown clock with a new song. he was already arguably the biggest hip-hop star at this point, so people were just feasting at the idea of surprise new music. about a week after that song, he released HUMBLE. and then a couple of weeks later, dropped the album. there was a ton of promotion afterward, for sure, but a lot of that was just completely viral due to the rave reviews it was getting. but then came the schwag, the Reeboks, the shirts, the collectors edition album, etc.
