The right's appropriation and weaponizing of that word is so hilariously dumb. And awful. And...
I actually love it. To be woke means to be aware. They are literally anti-awareness/anti-intelligence. It's honest and hilarious. They want to take us back to the dark ages and halt social progress. Fuck those people. They are truly bad people.

Language is fluid. Wokeness no doubt had honest beginnings, but now we've got white people claiming that you're racist if you condemn Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock.
It's unbelievably stupid, and deserves to be satirized.

the word "woke" had beginnings in the Black community; white people misusing it is a bit more than language evolution or fluidity
are we sure Kendrick Lamar gives a shit about the Will Smith thing?

I'll be interested in your thoughts, trag. Like me, I think you'll have some things you disagree with. But a lot of that, I think, comes from a need to live with the record longer. Hopefully, you enjoy it despite potential disagreements.
I listened to it right after the Indiecast discussion of the record which was... yeesh. So, this was a welcome pallet cleanser after that.
Listening to this today. Only 20 mins in so far, but it’s a great conversation.
So far my key takeaway is that those parts of the album that I was open to being solely creative expression, rather than truth — the sex addiction stuff — seems to be the truth.
I kind of bristle when the biographer suggests that Kendrick might be against cancel culture because it could hurt his career; I’d wager he’s against cancel culture because he’s in a season of healing and values the ability to talk openly about past indiscretions. But I’ll wait to see where this goes.

In N95 he basically scoffs at cancel culture because he's going to say what he thinks of you crackas whether you like it or not. I didn't think he was against it because it could affect his career per se.
But in the words of Stringer Bell, I don't know shit about shit.

Hard disagree with their take on Auntie Diaries. That Kendrick is somehow out of touch with the world, or didn’t understand how this song might be perceived, is laughable. That they spend five minutes talking about it seems like proof enough that it’s a successfully provocative piece of work.
Really starting to feel like wokeness and art criticism rarely mix well.

Notwithstanding my thoughts on the art, I think that sentiment is pretty fair. Unfortunately in our society, the line between what is discourse and what is offensive has been completely blurred and undefined, leaving folks to choose to completely disengage in discourse (probably a very strong majority) or to stomp on the hornet’s nest, consequences be damned (Trump is currently making a living doing this for better or worse regardless of your political preferences). It leaves most of the public listless at the least, reflexively defensive at worst and doesn’t accomplish the perceived goal of making a more fair and open society. In art, this is even more exaggerated because tearing down famous people is the easiest way to get attention for your cause.
In other words, if you are going to have a woke/cancel culture, you have to define what the rules are before you enforce them. Otherwise, you’ll find the other side much more effective at stomping on you because they feel like they can’t do much else - especially when apologies aren’t leading to forgiveness.
