Good post. I’ll clarify that I’m specifically referring to professional art criticism. I’m fine with the general public have contrary opinions to an artist’s intentions, and sharing those views wherever they see fit.
But for a professional critic, someone who makes their livelihood on the notion that they provide historical and cultural context for a piece of art, it just strikes me as really misguided that they would come out and say “Not woke enough.”

Just giving Superunknown a blast for the first time is ages. The title of this thread should be changed out of respect for the fact that it should not even be joked about in case someone took it seriously, didn’t rate Kendrick and ended up missing out on Soundgarden because of it. It would be a crime
I know a large part of the popular culture has moved on, and I totally get that, but I'm still in the weeds on this thing. I've been listening to more pods about the album. Reading more articles about the album. Having very deep and interesting conversations about the album. I'm kinda blown away by how engaging this thing is for being so abrasive and polarizing.
Maybe it's not a banger. Maybe it's not Kendrick's best. But it's one of the most authentic and pure "pieces of art" I've experienced in a long, long time. Like, the fact that no one has been able to take 15 seconds of this thing and make a tiktok trend out of it is fucking amazing. Or maybe they have. They probably have. I'm not on Tiktok.

Returned to Mr. Morale today after a month break. This record is awesome. Other than the skits I mentioned cutting, I'd lose Mother I Sober (featuring Beth Gibbons) and maybe Auntie Diaries. Both are really powerful songs, but they're both pretty long and kind of kill the overall energy of the album for me.
