The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
I guess the book ends around 1997/1998, though he talks about Layne's death too which didn't happen until 2002. Anyways I kind of got the impression that after the rehab he was finally clean and stopped using drugs for good. But then I came across this old article which implies that he was using again while he was in Queens of the Stone Age: http://archive.theskyiscrape.com/viewto ... b#p3505830
It would've been interesting to read more about that time period too, but he already said somewhere there's no way he would write a second book.
Yeah I believe he relapsed in 05. Isobel Campbell has spoken about this too as they were in the middle of recording an album together.
Indeed he does seem to speed through the end of the book, I would imagine that time was a pretty rough go and though his memory seems pretty spot on up until that point I'd guess things may had gotten awfully disjointed; well I'm fairly certain of that actually. He also notes the difficulty in writing the book and with Bourdain passing before it was finished I'm sure that didn't help.
2005 would have been the first LP with Campbell after the smatterings of the EPs. Ballad was certainly well received, which may have rose colored her memory a tad

It was because he kinda disappeared for a year but in my heart I wanted to do another one because as soon as we'd finished Ballad of the Broken Seas I was writing new songs and I was like "Oh God, I've got to get Mark to sing these."
I really enjoy their output together but indeed she does go in to his relapse amongst other things here

Even in 2006 with the first record, we couldn’t tour it because he was in rehab. So, you know, we started in 2007, but there was always a cold feeling. It was just complicated.

I listen to the Houston: Publishing Demos relatively often, it's a good collection of songs. I appreciated Lanegan's positive remarks on it as an 'album' in, IIRC, I Am the Wolf.

I havent really went back to the album, But that one and Halcyon Daze are my favorites.
Finally finished his book. Unfortunately, the story cuts off right at Layne's death and most of the book just revolves around him being dope sick and fucking up his life to score heroin. After awhile it just got boring.
I don't listen to this guy, but he's featuring on the next Cult of Luna record next year, which sounds interesting
Awesome, saw that yesterday as well. Speaking of, you should definitely consider listening to this guy...
where should I start?
If you're more into the electronica vibe, then I agree Blues Funeral from 2012 is a great place to start. If you're more into an acoustic or Americana-type vibe, I'd start with his 90s material, namely Whiskey For the Holy Ghost. I actually got into him through his old 90s band, Screaming Trees, who I still love to this day.
