So, I listened to The Nightfly by Fagen the other day and it's a great fucking album. I had been hearing IGY (What a Beautiful World) and never knew it was him. I always thought it was some black smooth R&B early 80's artist. Completely floored. I remembered hearing New Frontier, too. Both great tracks on a fantastic album.

Ha, I just listened to that yesterday! It's awesome. Both of their solo stuff is great in different ways; I love both of Becker's solo records. These guys are crazy talented.

I've not gotten any solo Becker stuff yet. I did find almost all of their early demos on YouTube the other day. And that movie they did the soundtrack to before they were Steely Dan.

I love all their albums, but I think they really hit on something special with Aja and Gaucho. They are just sonic perfection. There's nothing else that sounds like them.

Sonic perfection is what they were going for. It's why it took them so long to record them.

Spent the morning and early afternoon with Papa Wease laying down track on 4 Dan tunes. I put down all the leads except for the last one on Reelin in the Years as well as rythym guitar, so as soon as I can learn that last ride, it'll be done.
Started Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Peg and Pretzel Logic by putting down drum tracks. He's going to try and get a buddy of his to learn the bass parts on Rikki and Pretzel, but I gotta learn the rest. I'm hoping he'll work up some guitar parts, but he hasn't done any yet... He also wanting to do FM, but I don't know the drum part well enough to record it yet.
I still have to figure out some sort of jazzy stuff that Dias is doing on King of the World, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to pull off anything that sounds good. We finished Do It Again years ago. I only played drums and sang it.

I LOVE Night by Night. One of their (many) best songs.
Lately I've been bowled over by "Pixeleen". There is so much going on in that song - crazy dynamic. Reminds me a lot of why I love The Dillinger Escape Plan. My wife thinks I'm crazy when I say they sound similar to me but they really do.

So, I'm learning the piano part on Pretzel Logic right now. As a preface, I took piano lessons for three months when I was 15. That was 30 years ago. I can barely use both hands at the same time. I just figured out what he does in the chorus. He's a fucking genius. I've not felt this good learning a part in a long time. And the beauty is that what he does is what I didn't realize made me love the song in the first place. Just fucking genius.
