Before We Run is absolutely gorgeous. Amazing drum sounds coupled with beautiful horns. Easily one of their best.

You're going to just have to dive in head first. Their catalog is full of records that take different approaches, while always managing to sound exactly like a Yo La Tengo album. I like the vibe on I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One the best, but ten different YLT fans will tell you ten different albums.

Let me know what you grab next. Anxious to read your thoughts, VG.

I don't know how you feel about compilations, but for a very long time, Prisoner of Love was the extent of my YLT exposure. It's a great collection of their songs, and maybe better than any given album as an introduction to the band. As far as compilations go, this one has the feel of a proper double-CD collection. The songs seem to be ordered based on flow rather than chronology, which I really appreciate.

If none of that sways you, it's worth noting that Prisoner of Love is probably the quickest way to hear both "Autumn Sweater" and "Our Way To Fall," two of the prettiest YLT songs that I can think of.

listened for the first time just now. the first couple songs didn't grab me much but 'stupid things' really was beautiful and then 'i'll be around' made 'stupid things' its bitch. 'before we run' also stood out. i'm pretty sure this will all get even better with repeated listens.

as for getting into them- prisoners of love definitely is as good as any a place to start with yo la tengo. after that i'd go i can hear the heart beating as one, and then nothing turned you inside-out, and i am not afraid of you and i will beat your ass, probably in that order. god damn, fade is a fucking miracle album title.

From the first few seconds of Ohm I knew I would dig the album. Always a good feeling when you know right off the bat you're about to take a fun ride.

Do they just have a drummer that looks like Fred Armison or was it actually him playing with them on Fallon the other night?

That's Armisen. He's been known to drum from time to time. One of my best finds at the record store is an LP from a northwest band on K Records called Wandering Lucy, featuring him on the drums.

I was trying to save my money and not buy this LP until next month, but after watching that Fallon performance, I may have to bite the bullet and blow some bucks on Fade sooner.
