First listen, kind of distracted, not using headphones... I really wanted to like this a lot more. There are a handful of nice cuts, and in quickly flipping through each track, I like the whole sound of the record. There's lots of space and ambience, and they get harder than they have in a while, but nothing immediately blows me away. Let The Day Begin is the catchiest thing on the album and its a cover. It definitely needs more spins and I have a feeling I'll enjoy this more when I see them in May, but off the bat, its kinda eye-rolling, shoulder-shrugging. Although, you can tell that it has a little more to it than mere surface scratching. It really sounds like something you have to immerse yourself in for a while if its ever gonna click for you.
Baby 81 had the last batch of tracks that I really liked. And with their previous stuff up through Howl, they have an impressive body of work, but the last record lacked inspiration, and with this one feels similar. A few of these songs on first listen sounded like b-sides. Peter Hayes is one of my favorite songwriters in recent memory. I was expecting more from him this time around and don't think he stepped up to the plate. Again, I have to take some time to really pay attention to this, but my first impression wasn't all that great.

It may be their best since Howl.
Maybe. I dunno what their best would be since then. I didn't get into the last record all that much, and Baby 81 had some cool songs, but they were all derivative of certain influences. This one feels more personal, so the good stuff is pretty damn good, but the filler tracks are still meandering on the outskirts.

I actually kind of like that one. Hate The Taste, Rival, and Teenage Disease are where I lose the most interest. They just sound out of place after the first four tracks on the album. Sometimes The Light also sounds like an outlier even though its a pretty cool track. Maybe its the sequencing that bugs me about this. Perhaps its a little too jarring at times, but then again that could have been intentional.

It's not immediate for me. I think it's definitely a weaker record than I would typically expect from BRMC. I have enjoyed all of their previous albums a lot more on my first few spins.

Yup. Same here. I don't think Peter's rockers on this were his best work. There's some really good stuff though, but yeah, it requires headphones, dedicated listening, and maybe even a few live performances for some of this stuff.

Its rare for an album to immediately grab my attention and hold it for 45 minutes plus...
with that said... I think this is one of those albums that deserves more attentive listening than their previous efforts... lots of emotion in the music and lyrics, which is understandable given the circumstances surrounding the band at the time it was recorded...
BRMC has never been the most consistent band on record but when their good songs are really good and their bad songs are not that bad...

Rival sounded way too much like berlin. otherwise this record was pretty phenomenal. I didn't think they could top 'lose yourself' but Warning sign is a pretty wonderful song as well. I dunno these guys haven't made an album that I would not call amazing. it's all great.
oh. p.s. I don't think I have been on this board in a looonnngggg time. do SN's get deleted for being inactive?
