I really loved Incubus for a few years; I saw them three times between 2001 and 2003. Compared to the other aggro-funk-metal bands in their graduating class, they always sounded fresh, innovative, and complex, particularly once the aggro and metal parts tapered off a bit and were supplanted by the "Unthought Known'"-esque patchouli-and-Birkenstocks pseudo-spiritualism that accounted for well over half of "Morning View" (at the time we all thought that song with the Japanese koto thingie basically made Incubus the next Beatles). Compared to everything else, however, it is remarkable how much they just sound like those other aggro-funk-metal bands. In hindsight, Mike Eizinger was a tuneful, mathematically-minded guitarist who was cursed with a singer who could never more than half-form a song; Brandon Boyd could go from Beastie Boy to Backstreet Boy in 0.5 seconds but wouldn't know a melody if it bit him in his sexy bare torso, and he wrote like an art student trying to impress girls. At the time I remember thinking their incorporation of hip-hop elements was very boundary-defying, but all I can call to mind from memory is just the occasional DJ scratch over their normal rock arrangements -- I'm guessing there was more to it than that?

I saw them a few times at festivals in the early/mid 2000's and they were pretty good. I avoided nu-metal like the plague but that guitarist used to use some real interesting chords on Morning View. I always thought Wish You Were here was the perfect mix of Nirvana and Jane's Addiction.
