It reminded me of Bowie a little bit. And David Byrne for its "white dude with no groove" purposeful ridiculousness.
I'll reserve judgment until I hear the record. I really like Sparkle Hard.
Sparkle Hard was an instant classic for me. Very well rounded and straightforward without losing any of that SM charm. Hearing this one makes me understand “Rattler” more. I always thought that track was the only awkward moment on the album (though it’s GREAT live.)
This track, and probably this whole album, feels very derivative. I hear Kraftwerk, obviously. Your David Byrne comparison is apt too. However, as unoriginal as it all sounds, it feels completely different for Malkmus. No guitars? Deeper voice? I weirdly like it. I’ll be very curious to hear what his sets will sound like on this tour.

Total dreck.
I haven’t actually listened yet. Of the singles, I’m really digging Rushing the Acid Frat. There’s a real spacey Yellow Submarine-era beatles thing going on with all the keyboards and synths.

I can never listen to Unfair without hearing this stupid Coors Light commercial. The quiet/loud format along with the meter of there versus are what do it.

I know this is mostly Pavement/Malkmus posts, too lazy to search to see if Silver Jews thread exists. Sad to hear of Berman’s passing today. I’d considered trying to catch Purple Mountains on the upcoming tour, just in the hope of hearing some SJ songs. Another terrible loss.

I'm gutted by this one. Berman was brilliant, loved his poetry and American Water held a special place in my heart.

Btw Berman was absolutely right about Pearl Jam.

Reid, with everything you know about me (which has grown exponentially since we started following each other on Instagram), which post-Pavement Malkmus record do you think I would enjoy best?

Knowing your penchant for melody, I'd say Real Emotional Trash (a Jicks album).
It's more mature and super melodic, though the aural palette doesn't change at all. Please listen at least through 1:47 to get a sense of the melodies you'll hear contrasted with the stoner vibes.
Knowing your appreciation for more diverse sounds and general wackiness, I'd say Face the Truth (a solo album). It's more goofy and sonically all over the place. Two great examples:
