I don't always miss Alex, but when I do, it's in threads like this one.

boy this spate of jangly malkmusian earworms is galloping through my brain like a verlander four-seamer loosed on an overmatched 9-hole hitter

You’re either a HUGE spiral fan or an idiot or a family man with limited time or all three. That was a fantastic show...and Malkmus had less than 25% to do with it.

Tier One Jicks, ranked
1. Mirror Traffic
2. Real Emotional Trash
3. Sparkle Hard
4. Wig Out at Jagbags

Tier Two
1. Face The Truth
2. S/T
3. Pig Lib

I see a trend forming here. I also think Pavement's late-era work is the best in their catalog.

I just prefer the ramshackled greatness of early Pavement over the tepid melodies of TT and SM's solo stuff.

I can get that. Truthfully, you're the only fan of these musicians on this board who engages me with any regularity so I'm always hoping you'll turn around on this issue. Then that we can chat over and over again about how no song on Mirror Traffic is less than near perfect and it all flows so well together.

damn....Face the Truth and Pig Lib are tier two? I absolutely adore those albums, though I've given them many more listens than the ones you have in tier one - save Sparkle Hard.

I will agree that late-era Pavement is their best stuff - Brighten the Corners being the standout for me.

Additionally, I saw SM & the Jicks in Tulsa the other night, and it was great. It was my first time seeing them, and it was hard - for everyone there - to not focus entirely on Malkmus. It made me wish I would've seen Pavement when they were together. Dude is just a solid performer.

I was standing directly in front of Mike Clark's keyboard. That made it easy to focus on the band. That light show was pretty great, yeah?

In general I don't listen to near as much music as I used to, so keep that in mind when I say this. It might shed some light on what I look for in Malkmus's music nowadays:

Pig Lib is jammy and uneven. I consider it the Wowee Zowee of the Jicks catalog without Wowee Zowee's high points and era-defining charm. Some of the songs on Face the Truth are incredible ("It Kills" was a highlight of the Houston show), and others are awkward and (also) uneven for me. Those albums are both fun as hell, but it wasn't really until SM settled in with this current batch of Jicks that I think he really found his stride. Anything in the top tier for me is there because they are all full of full fledged songs and melodies. Something I crave more and more as I grow older.

oh shit...my wife and I were standing in front of him as well. I'll be honest, I didn't pay nearly as much attention to the lights as I did when we saw Pedro the Lion at the same venue back in February.

I would've loved to have seen them play anything from Face the Truth - being partial to Freeze the Saints and No More Shoes - and I felt kinda robbed only getting one from Pig Lib. I'll revisit Mirror Traffic though, along with your other top tier choices.

There wasn't much to it, but they nailed the vibe. Pink Floyd circa 1966.
