I think categorizing Joanna Newsom as "twee" shows a complete misunderstanding of what she does. I understand people not liking her voice, but "twee" is completely off the mark. Jangly, dusted-petal, whimsical Sarah Records type bands are what I think of when I think of "twee", or something like The Boy Least Likely To, not Newsom's sprawling, ambitious compositions.
Whatever. Is "warbling wood nymph" better? Not my thing at all.
Incubus’s Morning View is a beautifully realized musical vision with a sound and feel unlike anything else. I remember Devin Townsend saying that when he made his album Physicist, his goal was to make a metal album without any anger or aggression. While it’s not metal, I think Morning View accomplishes something similar (with a few exceptions; there’s a little venom in “Circles” and “Blood on the Ground”). Like, “Wish You Were Here” is a hooky rock song with loud, hard guitars, but there isn’t an ounce of aggression anywhere in it. Just pure warmth, happiness, joy. It’s airy and light and breezy. I wish there were more music like this.
