Ugh... I wish he was still with us.

Come out from under our covers
Put on your clothes
We're both sinking tonight
Forever it goes
After somebody hammers
Emergency glass
Sing in key with the sirens
It hurts so bad
As the salt water gushes
Into our ship's holes
Don't you dare jump without me
I'm not good on my own

Oh you're not leaving this wreck
We're both going down with it

There is peace beyond trouble
I'm desperate to meet you
Below the blue surface
In a quiet reprise
We're too poor to be precious
So cut off your nose
And come dying with me darling
In the bed of the ocean's
Great tank of disaster
It wrecks who it pleases
The swell pulls me under
Come under with me

Oh you're not leaving this wreck
We're both going down with it
Oh you're not leaving this wreck
We're both going down with it
Oh you're not leaving this wreck
I've got pills in my pocket

My daughter is 16 and has just recently gotten right into FR. It's been kind of bittersweet talking with her about the songs she likes and why (her fave is Keep Yourself Warm), but the hardest part was the discussion about Scott's suicide as she didn't know what had happened.

Like I said, bittersweet.

Oh boy.

This is hard. But a lot of healing in it.
BBC radio did a radio documentary on Scott and Frightened Rabbit.

Give it your full attention.

*not at work or on public transport. You will cry.

Thanks heaps for this Dime.

Hearing Grant talk about Scott's anxiety/depression was sobering and hell honest:

Interviewer: "When did you start to notice the anxiety?"

Grant: (with some difficulty) "You know this is something that I've thought a lot about. I...haven't suffered from anxiety or depression in the same way at all as he...did, so it was always hard for me to understand... It and to see it as more than just a bad day, or feeling sad, or feeling down, and I think that's quite a big problem...beyond Scott and its a wider issue that's quite hard to understand"

...

I think my wife must be cutting up onions in the kitchen or something.

It’s a tough listen but could and should be played everywhere.
So hate to hear this perspective and while addressing Scott’s own perspective and choice it leaves you with a clear message

Go write a song. Fuck what they say. Try keep Moving on. Don’t leave us. You’re treasured.

This band and that man are woefully under appreciated

Yeah, that news report is... tough.

You won't be listening alone, dime.

Must be something about that song for me this week - U2 played it over the PA as the last song before they started up on Wednesday night, sounded like it was their usual go to song at concerts before they kick off.

And here it is again.

been listening to mastersystem 'dance music' lately. really good album, hadn't listened to it before. it's super dense sounding and apparently the drum sound was meant to sound like dave grohl's on 'in utero'.

I've probably listened to FR more than any other band the past year.

The bangers on Sing the Greys and the songwriting on The Winter of Mixed Drinks are underrated, IMO.
Probably in the minority here, but besides the first two tracks on Pedestrian Verse, the album is pretty forgettable for me.

For Higgs:

01 The Modern Leper
02 Fast Blood
03 Square 9
04 Footshooter
05 Keep Yourself Warm
06 The Wrestle
07 Things
08 The Greys
09 Death Dream
10 My Backwards Walk

Quote:
The tenth track on Big Red Machine’s second album How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? was inspired by, and takes it’s name from the late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison who was a friend of Dessner’s.

Quote:
Aaron Dessner:

I wrote a sketch inspired by my friend Scott Hutchison from Frightened Rabbit, who passed away. It’s this dark, kind of spiritual, kind of gothic piano piece. I’d produced the last Frightened Rabbit record, and it was just very shocking. He’s not the first friend I’ve lost that way, but it’s just really hard, obviously, and sad. You wonder how did it get so bad, or did I check in enough, or did I miss signs, or did I not take it seriously enough? That was the sentiment, but we wanted it to feel cathartic and have this heavenly lift to it. Lisa Hannigan and Sharon Van Etten and Shara Nova sing so beautifully on it. They added their parts and really lifted it like this angelic choir almost.

Weird thing happened to me on Saturday. I hadn't listened to Frabbit in a bit so threw on a mixer of theirs I have as I was driving about the place running errands all morning. I was cranking the tunes and fully into it, windows down, singing along. It was really kinda cathartic, and I can't really tell you why.

That evening I was scrolling through Reddit and came across the Frabbit sub and turns out it was Scott's birthday that very day. And a user had generously put up a big ass collection of rarities that I grabbed straight away - listening through at work this morning.

Here's an interview from a year after Scott passed that I'd not previously read: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/jun/21/his-memory-shouldnt-be-shrouded-in-darkness-how-frightened-rabbit-coped-with-the-death-of-scott-hutchison

And here's Mogwai's remix of Mastersystem's "Old Team" for something a little different:

Years later and I still tear up whenever I listen to this stuff.

"The Work" is a book of Scott's words and lyrics that was released mid November. I had no idea about it at all and so totally missed any presale or whatever and can't seem to find it available anywhere now.

On the publisher's site you could click to be notified if it comes back into print, so I did, and yesterday morning I woke to an email telling me it was indeed back. I went straight there but sadly it was already sold out again. Curse you southern hemisphere time differences!

But then on a brighter note I saw a Reddit post about the brand new 2022 re-release of The Midnight Organ Fight on vinyl just announced! Jumped on Bandcamp and snagged it straight away.

I love that album.
