like bugs said, it's really all about Jerry. so if you want to find Jerry Garcia Band (studio & live) albums, The Pizza Tapes album and the Old and In The Way (S/T) album, you'll hear a side of him that doesn't (necessarily) come thru when he played with The Dead.
woah, only reading that album's title takes me back in a major way...
I didn't know elliseamos liked the dead.
What a day this has been!

If you love that one, check out Postcards from the Hanging. It's a collection of the Dead playing Dylan compiled (i think) by David Lemieux, the Dead's archivist. It's an amazing collection.
i saw that come up when i was looking for that album cover pic.
avoid the bob weir one, team.
Dude, no way. Desolation Row is awesome. Let's see you remember all those damn verses. Just ignore the short shorts and pink guitar.
desolation row is good

I didn't want to put this in the who are you into now thread, but the talk in there about the dead made me want to ask for advice on trying to get into them. I've got a few of their studio albums, but have never really been able to get into them more then likeing a few songs on each album, but at the times i was trying to get into them in the past i was usually listening to heavier music so the dead didn't really fit, so these days with me listening to stuff closer to the dead, maybe i will finally be able to get into them. So if there were suggestions for someone just trying to get into them, what would they be? If studio albums are the best place to start, what are the best ones to start with? And if live is the better way then what shows should i look for.
American Beauty.
But really, the s u b s t a n c e of them is in the live performance.
And not necessarily the "live albums" either, including the "Dick's Pick's" collection.

I woke up with this song playing in my head. Such a beautiful little ballad. Much different sounding version here than the countryish version on Workingman's Dead but it was the only time I got to see it live.
You told me goodbye, how was I to know you didn't mean goodbye, you meant please don't let me go?
I was having a high time, living the good life, well I know
The wheels are muddy, got a ton of hay, now listen here, Baby, 'cause I mean what I say.
I'm having a hard time, living the good life, well I know.
I was losing time, I had nothing to do, no one to fight, I came to you. Wheels broke down, leader won't draw, the line is busted, the last one I saw. Tomorrow come trouble, tomorrow come pain, now don't think too hard Baby, 'cause I know what I'm saying.
I could show you a high time, living the good life, don't be that way.
Nothing's for certain, it could always go wrong,
We could have us a high time, living the good life, well I know.

i will check them out for sure ive got some yard work that has to get done this weekend, so that will be prefect for listening to a show
and no offense to anyone that likes them, but ive never listened to phish and dont really have any plans to do so.
Oh Doc, hearing you say that makes me want to take you to the next NC or VA show. As much as you love music, you would dig Phish.
I listen to the Dead but never religiously. I love Tennessee Jed nd have thrown it on many mix tapes.
For JGB, check out Cats Under the Stars. Great album!
I've always thought that while the guys in Phish are all talented musicians and play their asses off that the songwriting is a far cry from what Hunter/Garcia turned out. There's just something missing that's always made me tune them out.
