This thread got me thinking about how there are parts of the music industry you'd assume pay much more than they do. I used to know a guy who worked as a touring musician for a mid-level pop act playing to 5000 people a night and he'd get about $50 a show (plus a small per diem for food)
the end of It Never Rains in Southern California, especially the last two lines, are some of the most depressing lyrics i've heard
Seems it never rains in southern California Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before It never rains in California But girl, don't they warn ya? It pours, man, it pours
The new Turnstile album has got me into punk rock right now. I went through my Spotify library and quickly assembled a bunch of, what I consider to be, punk songs to listen to on shuffle. Here's what I came up with.
One Armed Scissor - At the Drive In Invalid Litter Dept. - At the Drive In Here Come the Rome Plows - Drive Like Jehu Do You Compute - Drive Like Jehu Feel the Same - Bully Add It On - Bully Epic Problem - Fugazi Target - Fugazi Yes - Manic Street Preachers Faster - Manic Street Preachers Negative Creep - Nirvana Very Ape - Nirvana Worms of the Senses / Faculties of the Skull - Refused New Noise - Refused All the Surveryors - Shellac Squirrel Song - Shellac Words and Guitar - Sleater-Kinney The End of You - Sleater-Kinney Holiday - Turnstile Blackout - Turnstile Corpse Pose - Unwound Murder Movies - Unwound Drown With the Monster - White Lung Down it Goes - White Lung Camouflage, Camouflage - The Blood Brothers Laser Life - The Blood Brothers
Once a year or so, usually in the fall around my birthday, I get the urge to put together a Spotify playlist of the 90's christian alt rock I listened to as a teen. Then I remember that most of it isn't on streaming services. Then I listen to what's left and despair. 12 months later I do it again!
The Who is Daniel Johns? (Silverchair) pod is unbelievably corny so far. I've no doubt his late teens were difficult, but at one point while talking about the pressures of fame he starts hyperventilating/coughing. The interviewer asks if he needs a drink of water and Daniel replies "it's not that... ... it's not that". All very dramatic. Seems sus/self-absorbed in a Billy Corgan kind of way -- which is funny because Billy was interviewed for the series.

Any time a band took a bunch of label money and dumped into creating their own studio, it seems to pay off...But Spoon and Wilco are at the top of the pile, for me.
