What were they doing musically that was so great?
I dislike them precisely for how staid and uninteresting their music is to me. Forget lyrics
LA Woman is what turned me around. There's something about the bluesy-swagger wrapped up in their "little organ and a thumpy kick drum" routine that just feels so freaking cool and confident to me. I have come to appreciate other albums of their to varying degrees (most notably Morrison Hotel), but this particular album feels very original and unique to me.
Interesting. I've never been a big Doors fan at all, but a few years ago I listened again to LA Woman and do very much enjoy it. It is a great bluesy album, front to back.
Still no big Doors fan though...
LA Woman was also the album that converted me over to a fan. I personally feel it has a lot to do with Jerry Scheffs bass playing (rumor is he was going to join the band on tour if Jim didn't pass away, would have been their first tour WITH a bass player. Jerry went back to Elvis's band upon Jims passing)
Also, I wonder If the songs some are saying "Jims lyrics are horrible" were actually the songs Robby wrote? Most of the hits are Robbys songs lol. Jim has some really good lines within songs. "All our lives we sweat and save, saving for a shallow grave" has always been one of my favorites from The Soft Parade (song)
In retrospect, I think the Chris Gaines concept was ahead of its time.
It was just a marketing ploy. I'm not sure it was all that edgy or ahead of it's time really. But I do feel like only a handful of people really appreciated it for what it was in the moment. I miss the 90s.
