For a long time before I really dove into The Who, the only music I had of theirs was a burned CD with a bunch of songs from all across their career, compiled by a friend of mine. It featured the song "5:15," which I really loved. I especially enjoyed the sad little "why should I care? Why should I care?" part that served as an intro and outro, a plaintive little moment of melancholy bookending an otherwise boisterous track full of bravado. It really tickled me somehow, felt like a weird creative choice that gave the song a whole other dimension.
Of course that was before I listened to Quadrophenia and realized it was a concept album with recurring motifs, and the "why should I care" part came from the song "Cut My Hair," which wasn't on my burned CD. When I learned this, I was kind of disappointed. The choice to open and close the song like that made more sense. I prefered it the other way. Thanks for reading this post.

I’m half kidding. There’s certainly some great tracks on those later albums, but there’s also a lot of crap. I think they’re way more interesting as a scrappy blues rock band than a rock opera band.

I agree. But if we're counting live albums, I think Live At Leeds is their peak.

I've listened to Live at Leeds countless times but man does that release have some studio massaging and wonky reissue history.

Sort of...here's a rundown of the various version:
Original Album = editing/echo effects/backing vocal overdubs/crackling & analog master tape issues Expanded CD = digital remix/editing/less echo effects/backing & lead vocal overdubs/crackling removed Deluxe CD = same as expanded CD but mastered poorly and with a poor mix of Tommy Deluxe Hi-Res Download = entirely new mix, similar to expanded CD with superb mastering but no lead vocal overdubs, and finally an excellent mix of Tommy! Live At Leeds Complete (bootleg) = 100% complete and raw but still with backing vocal overdubs from 1970, mix is very good, there is a great fan-remastered version that fixes speed and tape issues
The deluxe download is the best "official" version, and the expanded CD is also excellent if you don't care about Tommy. The deluxe 2-CD is horrible.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time, everything felt very segmented. Personally, it wasn’t until I got into Columbia House a couple years later that I got caught up on a ton of records.

I was 11 in 1991.but I was already listening to everything from GnR to Frank Zappa. I was ordering Mudhoney albums from a catalog by the time I was 12! My early experiences in music discovery are a point of pride for me.
