I think early SP has always a great fucking production for whatever they sound is in that album, from the great psychadelic velvet of Gish, to the mix of shoegaze and grunge from SD to the heavy metal meets Bauhaus from Melon Collie...they always sound fucking good. My least favorite from that era is Machina, and thats still a great sounding album.

Yeah I like that description a lot.
Jimmy Chamberlain is my favorite thing about this band, so any of my opinions tend to revolve around he’s captured on the album (if at all).

man Jimmy is the best. He might be the best drummer of his era along with Matt C maybe....and yes, he is untouchable in those two, SD and MC.
One of the things modern SP is lacking is how to use and record Jimmy again in a proper form, even when the songs are great or good...but still those first seconds of Doomsday Clock are among the best stuff out there

I think it’s funny how at least once a tour cycle, Stone says something to the effect of “I forgot I didn’t totally hate these guys until we started planning this tour.”
