I really love those Great American Songbook standards. I just don't think there's any other kind of music that moves me in the same way. It's at the perfect intersection of my two favorite genres -- pop and jazz! (yes I know it precedes either but I mean it exhibits attributes of both modern pop -- its catchiness, melodicism, structuredness, playfulness and emotion -- and jazz -- its richness, orchestration, and musical sophistication. Does that make sense?)
Anyway I'm sitting here really high and nearly driven to tears by "All Of Me"

Did Gershwin ever do anything notably sad? Or is there another composer in a similar sonic space who did stuff that was sad, and maybe more spacious?

Going back to our 80's talk (sorry), but 'Always the Sun' by the Stranglers and 'She Drives Me Crazy' by Fine Young Cannibals are absolute bangers. The former I hadn't heard before. The latter is an unavoidable classic.

The Strangler's whole discography is quality, from the punk early days through the smoother/poppier later stuff. Really great band. I could do a hella good mix-tape for them.

This is the stuff right here;
This is great. No disrespect to Frank, but I'd love an instrumental version. But yeah KD, this was pretty dang close.

You'd never heard In the Wee Small Hours?!
I'd like to hear an instrumental version but I love his singing on it
It makes a great trilogy with Only the Lonely and Watertown
The essential sad-sack Frank. I'd reissue them together but using the incredible cover art for No One Cares, which qualifies thematically but isn't as good as the others

I'm by no stretch a Frank expert. I lived in Hoboken for a bit and they played his music everywhere. And between my childhood being surrounded by Italian immigrants, and my stint in Hoboken, I guess I felt like I'd digested enough to know what he's all about. But this record really does skew more somber than what I typically think of with him.
