I had high hopes for the new Breeders stuff but the first two songs have done nothing for me.
I was unimpressed when those tracks came out, but in the context of the album I think they're amazing.
Their new record is my favorite album they've ever done. It manages to be both sweet and sinister at the same time, and I love that they're able to stretch out to more atmospheric/spatial/textural guitar stuff, but still keep their core stripped-dpwm sound intact.
For all the frustration I have with PJ's attempts to sound angry and aggressive, but ultimately falling short, this Breeders record is the perfect antidote for that. These middle-aged gals made an album that is simultaneously dark, hopeful, and edgy, all without shredding my ear drums due to shitty production. Likely to be my favorite album of 2018.

You've inspired me to give it a spin on Spotify today, thanks trag (and nice to see you around here!)

Awesome, looking forward to reading your thoughts. My buddy who is also a huge Breeders fan isn't quite as enamored as I am with this one, but I've also listened to it probably 15 times to his 5. It may require a few spins to get its hooks in.
On May 4, Matador will release Girly-Sound To Guyville: The 25th Anniversary Box Set, a massive, 7-LP (or 3-CD) affair, which includes a remastered version of Exile To Guyville as well as the Girly-Sound Tapes, demos Phair recorded on cassette in 1991 and sent to a few friends in the Chicago music scene. Those were dubbed and passed around, then dubbed and passed around some more, eventually leading to Phair signing her first record contract. They’re restored for the first time in this box set, which also includes the obligatory book full of photos and essays and other ephemera.
Phair is also planning a tour to support the release, performing exclusively songs from the Girly-Sound Tapes. Those are below, as well as the NSFW art for Girly-Sound To Guyville: The 25th Anniversary Box Set—which you can pre-order here—and audio of the restored Girly-Sound version of “Divorce Song.”

I hate that a lot of my favorite songs are associated with bad memories. Maybe that's why I've largely abandoned most of the music of the nineties and aughts.
