I loved The Doors when I was 17. Not so much at 41.

If you love the same thing from 15 to 40, you haven't changed

The older I get, the more I think the Doors are absolutely amazing. Musically, they were doing great stuff. Morrison's lyrics are dopey but who cares? He had a great voice. Almost all rock lyrics are dopey, may as well go for broke. They're fine in context.

What were they doing musically that was so great?

I dislike them precisely for how staid and uninteresting their music is to me. Forget lyrics

LA Woman is what turned me around. There's something about the bluesy-swagger wrapped up in their "little organ and a thumpy kick drum" routine that just feels so freaking cool and confident to me. I have come to appreciate other albums of their to varying degrees (most notably Morrison Hotel), but this particular album feels very original and unique to me.

Interesting. I've never been a big Doors fan at all, but a few years ago I listened again to LA Woman and do very much enjoy it. It is a great bluesy album, front to back.

Still no big Doors fan though...

So a friend of mine attended Lollapalooza this weekend in Chicago, and she posted a photo of sign language interpreters by the side of the stage. This reminded me of "Given to Fly" from Touring Band. Does anybody know if those interpreters are signing all the lyrics as they hear them for the first time? Or are they people who have studied the lyrics beforehand? Very curious about how that works

Just spitballing, but Mrs Trag has done some French to English translations at public academia events, and she just went in cold. Not sure why sign language would be any different, though perhaps those interpreters are fans of their respective bands, and are therefore familiar with the lyrics?

I've also done live interpretation (English to Spanish and vice versa), but sung lyrics (which are often delivered faster than speech and, in a live music environment, probably harder to hear) are probably a whole different story. Yeah maybe the interpreters are selected for their familiarity with the band

It could be they're working from the same teleprompter as the singers.

Considering how often Ed fucks up the lyrics, seems like you'd want to do it cold instead of signing something incorrectly

Why is Robert so excited to see his lover "eat in the middle of the night" in "Friday I'm in Love"?

It always bothered me how that song treated Thursdays. Thursdays are fine days.

Also, i believe, you have to take the doors in context with what else was going on at the time.

I love the Doors. Its not something i grew out of but i certainly don't listen to them regularly as i once did. There are some really bad songs and some really great songs but generally Morrisons voice always keeps me captivated.

Also, i read No One Here Gets Out Alive maybe 4 times.
