I think The Breeders are one of the most singularly unique American rock bands of all time, but I’m worried there might be some influential band out there that influenced them heavily that I am not familiar with.

From I’d say ‘94 (when I watched their Woodstock ‘94 set on TV) through maybe 2002, I was a huge Primus fan - saw them twice, drove a few hours to see Oysterhead on their original tour, etc. - they fell off a bit for me, but not because I stopped liking them. Just saw other bands.
