Been listening to 'What a Terrible World...' again tonight. Is it stupid to think this could be their best album? My God! Thus record is so goddamn great. I LOVE it.

I've gone through a good portion of this band's catalog tonight (mostly outtakes) and I think I can safely say The Decemberists are fucking brilliant.

I love this band so much. Forgone? :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat:

"Foregone" is wonderful -- my favorite track from either of the "King" releases.

"My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist" is on my live bucket list. That and "Shiny." :luv:

Seen 'em both! "Trapeze Artist" at the show I linked to above, "Shiny" at the Riviera in '07.

"Legionnaire's Lament" would be my white whale -- I think I've seen them do everything from their first three albums except that song. I'd also really like to see them do "Apology Song" or "After the Bombs."

Just tracked down the recording of the show I saw where they did "Shiny." I've never listened to this recording before -- it's great! Funk is doing some lap steel thing on "Shiny" that I don't remember at all, and it's rocking my world.

This band is great!

They are amazing! Funk is maybe the most underrated guitar player in modern pop music.

Tonight's the night! The Decemberists live at Brooklyn Steel! :bammer:

Debating whether or not to look at last night's setlist.

I just looked at it. If it's a straight repeat, you'll be happy.

Thanks, buddy. I'm not sure how they're going to play this. Three nights in a row at the same venue. If it was Pearl Jam, I'd have no problem checking out the set list with confidence. But I'm not sure how much variation The Decemberists will employ from night to night.

Best to leave it be, I think. I can compare them tonight after the show.

Alright. Amazing show. I've never been to a concert where the sound was that good. You could hear everything. Every instrument, even the smaller handheld ones that the back-up singers were playing to add texture and color. It was all so well balanced. And my ears weren't ringing at the end of the show.

The crowd was outstanding. Easily the best NYC concert crowd I've ever been a part of. No one talked to much. People weren't filming and taking pictures the entire time. No one was wasted and/or disruptive. People were fairly polite and conscious of others' space. It was amazing. A wide swath of fandom. Some knew only the newer songs but paid attention during the older stuff. The people who knew the older stuff didn't seem to look down on or act superior to the newer fans.

They played a brand new song! Two of them actually, but one is a song for some sort of weird side/spinoff band they're working on. The second new song they played was outstanding. Very barroom old school country rock. But, you know, filtered through The Decemberists aesthetic. My wife and I both flipped out during it. I can't wait to hear what else they're cooking up.

Looking at the previous night's setlist: we got a totally different set. They really varied things up. Which is awesome. And the new song they played Monday night (it looks like they've played it a few times on this tour) was not the same new song they played for us. So that's cool. We got something special. Not sure if it's the first time they played it live or not but it was cool.

As an aside: I was at a board game store before the show and I asked a magic eight ball if we'd hear a Decemberists song that we'd never heard live before (I was thinking a song like Shiny or Better Not Wake the Baby; a known, recorded song, just one we hadn't heard them play live yet). And we actually got at least four! Bandit Queen, The Queen of Hearts (this is the side project song), We All Die Young (this was the brand new Decemberists song) and Dear Avery! My wife got to hear The Tain for the first time live, too! It was my third (fourth if you count the time I sneaked into the venue during soundcheck and heard them soundcheck the entire thing).

Aside #2: The version of Bandit Queen was a real highlight of the night for me. Totally stripped down (just Colin and John on stage). Had a bit more swing to it; more up tempo than normal. And they had back-up singers for the whole show but they fucking KILLED Bandit Queen. It was immaculate.

The entire show had a very mellow and relaxed feel. They didn't play a ton of fast stuff which was fine. They never lost the crowd. Colin never lost his voice. And it had a wonderful slow burn feel. Plus, again, the sound was so amazing that it just felt like you were bathing in the experience. It wasn't as quirky and "traveling theater" as many of the past shows that I've seen were. It was very mature and focused and tight. Really, really special show. Those of you who are big fans, I really wish you could have been there so we could talk about the shared experience.

Anyway... I've gone on far too long. Here's the set list in anyone cares:

1. The Crane Wife 3
2. The Island

(Colin then comments that we're entering into the water portion of the evening)

3. Down by the Water
4. Lake Song
5. The Wrong Year
6. The Gymnast, High Above Ground
7. Los Angeles, I'm Yours
8. Wonder (Colin solo: dedicated to his brand new niece)
9. Bandit Queen
10. The Queen of Hearts (with Olivia Chaney) (new song by side-project band: Option X (?))
11. We All Die Young (new song)
12. The Abduction of Margaret
13. Make You Better
14. This Is Why We Fight

Encore:
15. The Tain
16. Dear Avery
