still only the first two albums so far I'm afraid, but I loved them and I'm confident that I'll also enjoy their forays into prog and alternative when they happen

I know KD already covered some discussion group, but I'm really excited to see how you react to some of the later stuff. I adore the first two records (Her Majesty, especially!) but I think The Crane Wife (very proggy and heady and all about storytelling!) and What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World are my two favorites. The later is less proggy, it's just gorgeous songs that just fucking work all the way around.
But this is a band without a bad record. I genuinely love everything they've released. And, like PJ, they have a pretty deep bench of b-sides/non-album tracks that are among some of my favorite Decemberists tunes.
If you're jonesing for another epic, long form track, check out The Tain. I have a feeling that might be right up your alley.
