Maybe watch the Heaven Adores You movie to give you a broader perspective of him. It's kinda light and leaves out a lot of the really dark stuff but if you're struggling to get into him it can help. It's streaming on Amazon Prime.

indisputable fact that Either/Or is his crowning achievement
I disagree with this. It's great, but it's kinda one-dimensional compared to his later stuff. Any of his albums could understandably be considered his best, IMO. Nearly everything he made was brilliant in some way.

Either/Or is my favorite of his albums. But my friends who turned me on to Elliott are split between XO and Figure 8 as his best. It kinda depends on what you're looking for or what (if anything) has sparked you about his work in the past.
I would probably tell you to start with XO. It's a good balance between the more low-fi and simple Elliott Smith and the more lush and layered Elliott Smith.
just came across this little podcast.. pretty cool
What's Mary Lou's favorite Elliott song? That's a serious question.
I Figured You Out
thank you
She wanted to pick Whatever (folk song in C) but it was already chosen by Phoebe Bridgers. This was a better pick for her anyway because Elliott gave her the song.

Basement is my personal favorite. It goddamn breaks my heart we won't ever get to hear where he goes with this "wall of sound" and crazy slightly mistuned guitars approach. He was going to make some mind blowing stuff, and this album gives us glimpses of this. I hate so much that he has been dead all these years. Selfish of me I guess.

Been thinking about it all morning. When he broke through for Good Will Hunting, XO, Figure 8, then his scrapped follow up before his death…at the time is seemed like a long period. But it was really just like three years. Sad to see the speed with which the hard stuff seemed to enter his life and swallow him up.
