It's great to finally have a soundboard version of My New Freedom. The guitar work on that is just wonderful.

Any Elliot Smith fans on RM?

I love him

I've seen some RMers talk about him before, I think at least trag and d,t are fans.

yep, huge fan here. have not enjoyed all his posthumous releases too much; they feel sort of redundant. but everything up to and including From a Basement... (technically posthumous, i know) is magnificent.

i saw him do a solo show in Cambridge right before he blew up in '99, that was pretty amazing. and my pal Larry is actually the executor of his musical estate.

what's on your mind re: elliott, ruddo?

I went through long periods in which ES was pretty much the only music I listened to. His strumming/picking patterns/ability are highlights for me. See Condor Ave. and Somebody I Used To Know.

Angeles is my favorite example of this, but yeah

Angeles is pretty straight forward, .. uptempo picking. Skillful, nonetheless. The patterns in Condor Ave. and Somebdoy That I Used To Know are not obvious and kinda difficult to emulate. Very creative usages of chord changes and rhythmic strumming/picking.

yeah but Angeles is just so delicate and blurry, though. It sounds like overdubs but it's not.

I agree, trag, but that's not a quality of his I was referring to, which I appreciate most.

It's been far too long since I've given this guy a good listen.

Listened to Figure 8 on my drive this morning, first time in quite a while. Spent the hour on the verge of tears. Miss you, Elliott.

Man, From A Basement On A Hill has some thrilling moments. I especially love the heavier stuff like Coast To Coast, Don't Go Down, and Strung Out Again. I'd never pick this as my favorite Elliott album, but it definitely has some of my favorite stuff in his catalog. It's harkens back to Heatmiser, and also makes me think of like a heavier Either/Or. Wish we had been able to get more of the heavy stuff from him.

Yeah, it's a classic album, and it's not even fully realized. Either/Or is what introduced me to ES, XO is the one I would call his "best", but Basement might actually be my favorite
