I just think it's really flat and uninteresting musically. And repetitive, though I guess it's supposed to be.
As a post-modern jab at the success of Teen Spirit, I can appreciate its cleverness. But I'd also put it near the bottom of the Nirvana song list.
Eh, any list has songs that are on the bottom simply because they can't all be #1. It's still good. I just like how it starts out as SLTS and then dives into the song proper.
Quote:
Nirvana had wanted to play "Rape Me" during its performance at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. While MTV initially told the band they could play any song they wanted, the network later insisted that the group play "Smells Like Teen Spirit" instead. Hours before the show, Nirvana refused to play. However, due to concerns that the network could boycott other artists on the group's label if the group refused to play the show, Nirvana ultimately settled on performing its then-latest single "Lithium". At the start of the performance, Cobain started playing and singing "Rape Me" instead; he said he did so "just to give [MTV] a little heart palpitation". Panicked, MTV was moments away from switching from the live performance to a commercial when the band stopped playing "Rape Me" and started playing "Lithium".[3]
Which doesn't sound like the way it was supposed to go but after the MTV thing, it did.

Also, "Very Ape"
Great call, LV. Of course the general Melvins influence is obvious, but I never made the connection between those two songs.
Jorge, I can easily hear the similarities between yours and Very Ape...But do you know if Kurt ever name-checked that band or anything? I've never heard of them, but that doesn't mean shit.

They opened for Nirvana when they played in Argentina in 92. The band members say they gave them a copy of their album, and believe the song influenced "Very Ape". But it could also just be a coincidence.

Well in that case, I'm on board with this...
Anyone ever read Kurt's diaries that Courtney put out? Nirvana's whole aesthetic was incredibly calculated. Which is fine. But it dispelled the notion I had of them as this basement band that blew up by accident.

I haven't read those, but absolutely agree. I have a friend who was really close with Kurt. Has done several books and films about him. I remember having a beer with him when one of his films came out, and he mentioned how Kurt was really worried and almost obsessed with how the band would be portrayed. Very into the aesthetic. Which is commendable of course, it's all part of the product, ya know? It's just weird to hear that stuff when you have this perception of the band that was built through the media, or through the band themselves with a lot of planning and you just see the end product.
edit: also have a close relationship with people in the PJ camp. Ed used to be like this too. I don't know how much anymore. But there are stories of how obsessed he was with the visual aspects of the albums and band portrayal for a while.

As with Jimi Hendrix, any shitty but properly-recorded concert they played that qualifies as an "event" is fair game for a live release.
Even if I was in charge of putting together a live highlights mix, I wouldn't use anything from Reading.
A selection of recently surfaced rarities for the serious collector, remastered by everyone's favourite remasterer.
Probably best to steer clear of this one mikejasond
