I got new earbud/headphones recently and listened to several albums. I was shocked to discover that the one that sounded the best of all of them was Riot Act.

Look, I've always known that Riot Act was PJ's best sounding album. But I didn't realize HOW great it is until I listened surrounded by other great sounding records.

Riot Act: Nothing remotely tricky about the mix on this record, but the mastery of the technique is impressive. This is a fabulous recording, and had it been done by T-Bone Burnett rather than Adam Kaspar, I suspect it would get a lot more attention in recording circles.

I said "mastery" at the time, but I should've said "restraint." Their willingness to just let this album sound like a band in a room, and resist any urge to mess with that, is one of their greatest creative choices yet.

It's so good

Legitimately one of the most enjoyable listening experiences I've ever had. I hear bits of Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, even Boards of Canada in there.

Great call on this one.

Fuck Yes! This is great. Cheers Jorge.

Revisiting Elliott Smith as of late. Figure 8 is meant for headphones and walking, I think. The whispered vocals, the crystalline strumming, the clinky pianos, all hit like candy when it's mainlined directly into your ear. Feel like XO and Either/Or are going to do this even better.
