I have begun the journey. I won’t report as exhaustively on this but make a couple of notes. I listened to Neil Young and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere today. The self-titled is excellent and really works as a template for his whole career to come. Acoustic ballads, rock stomps, and lush arrangements are peppered throughout. Also, I am reminded again of my love for Everybody Knows... I mean, Down By The River is like wearing your most comfortable shoe or meeting up with an old friend for the first time in a while. It continues to just feel right.

I listened to After the Gold Rush and Harvest this morning. These early albums are just purely great to listen to.

They’re both amazing, but A Man Needs A Maid is such an awful song

Yeah, I am not too crazy about the lyrics but the music is wonderful.

The version at massey hall does me just fine. Otherwise the overblown orchestral arrangements of the album leave me feeling uninspired.

I love A Man Needs A Maid and I agree with Strat that the Massey Hall version is definitive.

I always thought that the Massey Hall version of Don’t Let It Bring You Down was phenomenal

I believe neil wished he had released many of those versions as the album versions

Now through On the Beach and Time Fades Away:

1) always loved Walk On, but really most of the album is really solid.

2) this is actually the first time I have heard Time Fades Away. I did not know it was an album of new songs all live. And that they are solid throughout.

The Ditch Trilogy is notable because Neil got a bunch of crack musicians, then made them play their non-primary instruments. It creates this off-kilter feel that I think suits him perfectly, and the vibe on TFA is my favorite iteration of that.

Interesting. The best part of this journey is that I am familiar with a lot of the music but not all of it, and that makes this process as much about discovery than the sheer will to listen to 33 albums by one artist in a relatively short period of time. I may have a couple weeks where I listen to very little while I am away, but the journey will continue soon.

Bit of history here yesterday down in Kilkenny. Neil and Dylan played together for the first time in 25 years.
