From a new interview on Vulture. Corin sounds characteristically reasonable, and Carrie sounds to me like a bit of a megalomaniac. Reading between the lines it sound like "I wanted to try new things and Janet didn't, and I was unwilling to compromise so she decided to quit."

That's my take anyway, would be glad to hear an alternative one.

Quote:
In 2019, Janet Weiss suggested that she had been shut out of decision-making processes in the band and that was why she left. I’m curious how you feel about that characterization.

CB: I mean, anyone who thinks there aren’t multiple perspectives and sides to this is either being willfully ignorant or perhaps lacks their own real-life experience. To be honest, I’m not interested in continuing to talk about something that really seems to revel in female cattiness and conjecture and confirmation bias.

I do think news of the lineup changing cast The Center Won’t Hold in a certain light. You were working with Annie Clark from St. Vincent, and she’d just put out a record with Jack Antonoff, who had just worked with Taylor Swift. Some people thought the band took a sharp left into pop music and kinda came apart.

CT: Personally, I’m always wanting to try different things and to be creative in different ways. That can be hard sometimes. It can be difficult. It can make you uncomfortable. I think that’s part of being an artist and doing work that keeps you interested over a long period of time. And I feel like we learned so much from the last record, from Annie producing and everything we were trying out. We’d never really written with keyboards. We tried a lot of different things. I’m not saying they were all successful, but it was different. We were able to take those new skills and put them to use on this new album.

CB: I find it really interesting that the same people who reject conservatism [in politics] will insist upon a very orthodox view of this band, that people who rail against binary oppositions on all fronts will settle for reductive, fixed, black-and-white narratives of Sleater-Kinney through refusing to acknowledge nuance or multiple truths. Sometimes it seemed like the reaction to The Center Won’t Hold was more about us refusing to conform to a codified and static version of ourselves. Ultimately, the role of the artist, I have always thought, is to experiment and thrash around and make mistakes and just be out. I’m not saying that’s what we did on the last record. If everyone’s aiming for the same bull’s-eye, you end up with conformity, so we’ve always seen our role as being out of step sometimes with what people want.

im not sure i have the same vibe. They went for a different route and i applaud them for that choice, even if i havent picked the last album in a long time nor i feel like it.

Janet leaving after the release of the album and an upcoming tour also says a lot about her.

I think her response is pretty much "there's many sides to this, and I'm not getting involved in a back-and-forth that doesn't look good for anybody" - which is pretty much exactly what I would say, especially considering how icky some of that conversation got last time around. It's not the first time members of a band leave over creative differences, and won't be the last, so I wouldn't be surprised if they try to do whatever they can in interviews to avoid rehashing that.

I think they are both over it, and talking about it, and have moved on.

Hell, I'm even tired of hearing about it lol. Janet quit, they asked her to stay, she walked out.
I'm not listening to any of the songs they drop till the album comes out... I hate this whole "hey heres another new song, album out in 2 months" slow release

The only thing I could care less about than the Janet split is Sleater-Kinney in general

I put this in the NIN thread last night, oops.

Album's out. I've skimmed through, will actually listen tomorrow. What I'm hearing, I like. I was hoping for some hard rock and I'm not hearing that, but that's okay.

I'll enjoy this, but still hope for something closer to the older SK next time.

I really like this new record. It has such a cool vibe. It feels like a transitional record. I almost wish it had come out before No Cities to Love. I wonder if it would have worked better for some folks that way.

But I really dig it. I'm not sure where it'll land overall for me. But my first impression is strong.

I only listened to the first song and i liked it...it kinda took me back to the first days of SK, were the guitars were the most prominent feature of this band..and the way they mixed their vocals...i guess when Janet came they really become this three monster type of band and im sure drums are not going to be something out of this world in this new album.

As someone who really liked the first two post-hiatus albums, I’m not really feeling this one yet. ‘Favorite Neighbor’ is the only one that’s really hitting the spot so far.

Some of the Corin songs sound very reminiscent of her solo records, which I liked, but guess it’s just not what I want from a S-K record. Here’s to hoping it’s a slow burner
