Kind of Blue is the only one I've really enjoyed.

Bitches Brew is a classic for a reason, but I'm not a huge fan of bop/acid jazz in general, and when I want it, I'll just go with Herbie Hancock so I at least get more of the acid and less of the bop.

Dark Magus is pretty awesome at time, but it also gets pretty wankish.

Not a big fan of Sketches of Spain.

There are others I've heard, but nothing ever grabbed me. And yet I still feel like I've just scratched the surface.

Coltrane, baby. That's much more my speed.

Yeah, Sketches of Spain is fine but it’s more planned out if that makes sense. The reason I glided to the 3 I discussed has more to do with the improvisational feel of each of those albums.

I am going to check out In a Silent Way ASAP. I nearly ordered it (I have owned Kind of Blue on CD for more than a decade but grabbed it on vinyl recently, replayed and now I am back in another Miles run - it sounded so good), but went at the last second with Blue Trane. Trying to catch up on some classics.

In a Silent Way is an extremely special album to me and, in my opinion, sounds entirely singular in Miles's catalog -- even if someone had heard 50 other Miles albums and hated them all, I'd still put in a recommendation for it (unless what they hated about the other 50 was Miles's soloing, in which case this one won't sell them).

I really love Miles and will refrain from making this thread a deluge of recommendations, but I'm definitely excited to see anyone dig deeper into his catalog and will gladly go along for any portion of that ride :)

It’s probably a bit too intimidating to do a journey - plus whereas I am decently versed in classic rock I have next to no background in jazz but for a handful of jazz albums I have listened to over the years. Some, like Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, I have known for decades while most others are in the past couple of years when I have taken mini plunges.

I no doubt go on "kicks" with jazz artists, but overall I find it's a style of music beautifully suited to a leisurely, lifelong pursuit; I don't know that there's ever been a jazz artist where I've just voraciously consumed their entire discography over the span of a few days/weeks. Even the ones I really love, I've explored and discovered over years, and still have little bits of catalog to check out here and there as the spirit moves me.

In a Silent Way was really great. It seems so simplified compared to everything else I have heard from him. Just taking a great groove between the drums and bass and just playing over that and not sort of going wild. It was really a fantastic listen and some of the best bass/drum combo I can recall ever hearing. Thanks!!

The oldest Weaseling is in the high school band’s Jazz Band. (She was the drum major for marching band). The jazz band included My Favorite Things (she was also in The Sound of Music a few years back) in their winter performance the other night. Afterwards, I sent her Coltrane’s version. She dug it.

It would've been hilarious if she'd been like "they're playing it all wrong!"

Listening a lot to Mingus's Ah Um and Blues and Roots a lot the last couple days. Both albums are fantastic, and while I can see why Ah Um is regarded so highly (musically it's the more sophisticated work, while sacrificing nothing in accessibility), I think I might actually like Blues and Roots a bit better -- it's so raw and primal-sounding, like 50 years of music history from big band swing to Gospel to Dixieland jazz distilled into one feral, impromptu jam session. Mingus's vocalizing just adds this crazy sense of urgency to it -- like the maelstrom of sound is a boulder barreling down a mountain at you, and he's yelling at you to run like hell. Tremendous stuff.
