I haven't been able to stop listening to Nels Cline's version of this song from Lovers and it led me to discovering this beautiful recording by Coltrane and guitarist Kenny Burrell:

That's a gorgeous recording -- I really need to get around to checking that album out in full. I've given Coltrane's Prestige years short shrift in my collecting of his albums, as the critical consensus is always that it's fairly standard-issue, straight-ahead jazz compared to his richer Atlantic and more experimental Impulse years. But I forget that I really like straight-ahead jazz, and every time I've bucked that logic I've been extremely pleased. Thanks for the link.
Here's my favorite version of "Why Was I Born?" -- taken at a much different pace, deliriously joyful rather than solemn and meditative. Sonny and his band make subtle nods to various familiar melodies multiple times throughout this concert, and to me it sounds like he quotes "Oh Susannah" at about 13:38.

Also, I read that Rudy Van Gelder died yesterday at 91. What an absolutely incredible life that man had. He was probably the recording engineer for literally 50% if not more of the most famous jazz recordings of all time. RIP and thanks for all the recordings.

This is pretty good. I was somewhat suprised Miles did this. I was also suprised how well he is still playing. Just few months from this and he was dead.
