Gogo Penguin are fantastic. Wholeheartedly.endorse that recommendation.

Have you heard their new one from last year, Ello? New drummer, but still great…

I am listening to The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. I love this record so much. Can you guys give me some Jazz recommendations in that vein? It's my favorite Jazz record I heard so far but I am not very well versed in the genre. I love manic/chaotic energy mixed with these amazing melodies. And it SOUNDS amazing.

I love Black Saint as well, though I think my favorite Mingus album is Blues and Roots -- highly recommend that one too if you've been a fan of Mingus so far (I am relatively new to a lot of his stuff, so some others can probably give some better recommendations).

I'm not sure if there is another artist that strikes the balance between chaos and melody the same way Mingus does, but if you're good with swinging the pendulum a little to the melody side, I'd recommend a few later-era Duke Ellington records, specifically Blues In Orbit and (especially) And His Mother Called Him Bill -- Mingus's composing and bandleading style is very much in the Ellington mold, and some of these later records IMO possess a bit of that uptempo Mingus energy.

If you want something truly chaotic, take a couple ibuprofen and listen to Coltrane's Ascension. :)

That's a bummer. This is one of my favorite tracks from last year.

They're all pretty clean, from what I've heard -- very tight, very precise. If you're looking for the looseness and spontaneity that you get in a lot of jazz, this definitely won't scratch the itch. Incredible playing though, often beautiful piano passages and, as Ello says, a crazy good rhythm section. To me they're kind of a meeting point between jazz, post-rock, and some form of dance/house music that I am ill-equipped to describe or categorize.

Knowing the word "bop" mostly from the current usage as "very good song" the genres "Post-Bop" and "Hard Bop" are quite funny

I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD650 recently and this record is one of the best sounding things on these cans so far

Coltrane's Ascension might be the most chaotic jazz experience of all time
