That’s awesome! But also, I imagine, something of a B-tier story for a guy who has hung with Ron Carter.

But totally agree, too young. This whole album — “Rainbow Sign” — is amazing (with Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, and others).

Listening to Frisell´s Good Dog, Happy Man.

Dude, ¨Rain, Rain¨ is beautiful. So small and quiet. I remember being very angry with how this album was perceived back in the day, like something very minor in his career.

I posted this like two years ago! It's great. I fell in love with it for about a week but I need to revisit.

I find Kamasi to be widely overrated. Always feels like he's leaning too hard on the idea of "afrofuturism meets bop," of whatever it is he's going for. His music never lives up to the album cover!

Weird take on Kamasi. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense

and I'm a huge Thundercat fan!

I have such a limited appetite for bop or fusion jazz. Bores me silly really fast.

I would not think to confine his work to either of those labels (though I guess technically "jazz fusion" qualifies since it's such a blanket term). He is one of the most eclectic and diverse artists in the scene. Heaven and Earth covers such a huge breadth of styles, and I'm still getting to know this new one but it's similarly sprawling orchestral jazz drawing influences from everything from Sun Ra to John Coltrane to hip-hop, soul and funk. Everything he makes is just so dynamic and rich. Movement and color everywhere

Love Sun Ra and Coltrane. I haven't listened to the new Kamasi outside of the opening song, but I got his last set on vinyl thinking I was getting just what you described (based on reviews), and I found it to be very unfocused. And "sprawling" and "dynamic" signal to me a broad range of emotional depth backed by literally dynamic (from a decibel perspective) performances. The LP tried to cram everything onto three discs instead of four -- music right up to the spindle on each disc -- so there effectively were no dynamics. I came to view the album as "relentless" more than anything else, and that was after 4-5 listens. So I sold it.

I really like Kamasi but minimalist he isn’t — I definitely understand feeling a bit like he’s always got the CAPS LOCK on. But ultimately I agree with Jorge about the music — a really compelling tapestry of different stuff.
