Is it just all the spoken word and general absence of vocal hooks that turns people off? Musically, it's pretty on point, and very much in their language.
I wonder if, to an extent, the 0.0 review it got from Pitchfork kind of saddled it with a reputation that came to precede it for a while. I was certainly conscious of that review before I'd heard the album, and I remember being surprised upon hearing the record how relatively conventional of a SY record it was, given its outlier reputation.

Yeah I think that’s totally fair. It got trounced in the press. But it was a tough album for me to get into, because at that point I’d only heard EJST&NS, Daydream Nation, and Washing Machine. Those first two were bey song focused, and the outer limits of WM were balanced by the more direct songs. So NYC was really challenging for me
That's fair. I also got the album for $2 in 2013, so the stakes were pretty low. I was expecting a completely unlistenable, pretentious mess, and I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, no arguments that it's a fair bit more impenetrable than something like Daydream Nation or A Thousand Leaves, but it certainly didn't live up to its reputation as this totally off-brand thing with no conventionally pleasing qualities.

I don't have speakers on the computer I used to post that video, so I just watched it in silence. It's really fun imagining the music to this. Please, nobody tell me what it sounds like yet.

Holy shit that rules!
I now expect this album will be great. Not sure how often I’ll listen to it because it sounds pretty intense...But it also sounds like a really compelling listen and fairly unlike any other music Ive heard.

ok, so i just listened with headphones, i think i'll listen to this album a lot actually. She's made a pretty clear choice to make the abrasive sounds easily palatable by virtue of her mixing decisions. It's a very "warm," gentle mix of ugly sounds.

Could we do the standup comedian thread instead?
I feel like that kind of conceptual ghettoization is not going to produce the full board meltdown I'm wanting this to provoke
