I've consumed a bunch of reviews the last few days, but this bit from The Quietus has me so excited:

Quote:
The result is a loose, nimble work of neo-folk that pokes its head into desert blues, experimental rock, and country, then has a good nose around. It manages to sound both mediaeval and futuristic, with big hollow kick drums booming underneath queasy loops and staticky textures, the tales of “milchi seeps heady in the meadows” ringing over boinging, squelching electronics. At a push, we might term this intelligent folk dance music. Or acid alehouse. Or… breakwheat? Field recordings (courtesy of Adam Bartlett) and strange, blustery frequencies also contribute to the mulch and oomska of the music (helped in no small part by Harvey’s creative partnership with Flood and John Parish, who provided production and additional instrumentation).

Hopefully listen tonight.

So much better/ varied/ than I thought it would be after hearing the two singles, though they work in the context of the album.

I really like the production.

This is a great PJ Harvey album, with elements of what she has done before (WC, LES, ITD), while still sounding new, challenging and exciting.

Love it. So much. It’s incredibly heady though, gonna have to spend some time with the lyrics.

My pre-ordered vinyl is arriving today. Also my daughter's first birthday. She's excited for the first spin tonight, having heard the other records too many times already.

Nice parenting swan! My almost-4-year-old loves Let England Shake.

I was also thinking it’s like a combo of those three albums.

Second listen and its even better. Heady indeed. I'll probably nerd out with a copy of the poetry book at some point.

Are you a general fan, psycho? Or do you need some guidance here? New one is definitely not the easiest point of entry I’d you’re just getting into her

Have you listened to anything else? We’re talking Bowie-levels of reinvention here, but one clear dividing line starts with White Chalk. Everything prior to that was sung in a lower register, and generally built around rock guitar. Starting with White Chalk she shifted to a higher vocal register, and the music got more ethereal and rooted in history.

Her first five records are legit masterpieces and unfuckwithable. I'm personally particularly fond of albums 3-5 (To Bring You My Love, Is This Desire?, and Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea). Each of them is different and each of them is exactly what I want on any given day. Dry and Rid of Me are also amazing, of course. And I think most fans prefer them. I don't care which of those first five one prefers. All are brilliant.
