Very odd for this day and age indeed - brings back memories of just happening across releases in record stores rather than hearing about them months in advance online.

In other news, I really like her Leonard Cohen cover for 'Bad Sisters' - great show btw :nice:

That cover is great, btw. Never heard it before. When was it recorded?

I'm excited by the box set, though I think it falls outside the budget. Despite being a pretty big fan, I haven't really deep dived b-sides/ rarities outside of the 4 track demos and the Peel sessions.

Box set ships early November. Cost is $120-$130. I'll bite on this, but I'll go through Amazon to guarantee the lowest price.

This release and the new album coming out have gotten me on a PJH run. I've buy this release on at least CD.

Just picked up TBYML Demos on vinyl for a healthy discount. The other ones I want that I don't have are ITD? and LES. I'll wait out for discounts on them as well.

At first blush this seems to be in the same vein as Hope Six. But I did see a clip of a harmonica, and also a binaural head.

Quote:
PJ Harvey's tenth studio album I Inside the Old Year Dying will be released July 7th 2023 on Partisan Records, and is available to pre-order on gatefold 140g vinyl and CD, along with some newly designed merchandise products. There are a limited number of hand-signed lyric cards available from the official PJ Harvey store.

PJ Harvey says, "After many years of work I am very happy to release this collection of new songs. It was a difficult album to make and took time to find its strongest form, but it has finally become all I hoped for it to be."

I Inside the Old Year Dying marks PJ Harvey's first album in seven years, produced and mixed by her long-time creative collaborators John Parish and Flood.

"On this album PJ Harvey builds a sonic universe somehow located in a space between life's opposites, and between recent history and the ancient past.

Scattered with biblical imagery and references to Shakespeare, all of these distinctions ultimately dissolve into something profoundly uplifting and redemptive." - John Harris, March 2023

Tune into Lauren Laverne's breakfast show on BBC Radio 6 Music on Wednesday April 26th between 8:30 and 9am BST for the premiere of lead single, 'lead single, 'A Child's Question, August]A Child's Question, August'.

this feels like Hope Six/LES. Hopefully it's more the latter than the former.

Totally agree yeah, more LES, less Hope is definitely what i want too, she lost me on Hope, I tried it again and again but it stubbornly refuses to grab me and I otherwise like everything she's done so that upsets me to no end.

I quite like that new song so far, fingers crossed.

i LOVE this new song. I love how untethered it is; it's difficult to discern the tonic (root note), and to identify a clear verse/chorus structure. It just kind of floats along, doing odd things with sound effects and timing similar to my favorite tracks on LES.

This is encouraging.

I like this. Second listen got me. My first thoughts were like White chalk with guitars and a beat out of the quieter tracks from ITD. But this has a new space to it... and depth.

I've got to say, I loved the wheel when that single came out, and I was excited for the album. The tour was great, in a theatrical kind of way, and gave me a new appreciation of Hope 6. But now I hardly put it on.

LES? I still play that a couple of times a year.

Second single is out and it’s a lovely somber number. Also feels most like LES

Neither of these songs seem terribly memorable but it doesn't change the fact that PJ is an incredible artist.

I disagree on the first single, I think that’ll age really well. This most recent one feels like a deep cut though.

I think they'll age fine, they're just not on par with her A and A+ material.

This record might turn out to be a minor work in her discography - doesn't mean she isn't fucking amazing.
