Look, Tom Waits is a funny guy. He write some funny lyrics. He tells funny stories on stage. He has never played a character in film or television that is not at least a little bit funny, usually a lot. It is not a knock on the man at all when I say that his best music has a humorous element.

But that's not what you said!

Very cool, thanks for sharing. The sound recording contingent of RM will probably be into this

Been contemplating some of my favorite Tom Waits lyrics. Right now this one absolutely destroys me. Its so beautiful and heartbreaking. Its such a poignant realization that sometimes "love ain't enough"

He said, 'You cannot live in the ocean'
And she said to him
'You never can live in the sky'
But the ocean is filled with tears
And the sea turns into a mirror
There's a whale in the moon when it's clear
And a bird on the tide
Please don't cry
Let me dry your eyes
So tell me that you will wait for me
Hold me in your arms
I promise we never will part
I'll never sail back to the time
But I'll always pretend you're mine
Though I know that we both must part
You can live in my heart

I remember getting the Alice bootleg and wearing it out. It’s weird...when the album was announced, I felt like I’d already been living with those songs for a long time. But it couldn’t have been earlier than 99 when I got it.

I still love both versions. The demos feel more Black Rideresque to me, but then they are from...1992? I don’t remember.

Man, Kiss Me is soo good.

Feels like a lost track from his Asylum era.
