Evil Urges is not their best record, but it’s better than it’s given credit for.
Evil Urges, the song, is an excellent table setter. It relays immediately that this album is not going to be a retread of what they’ve already done, and has a catchy hook with psychedelic vibes. Touch Me Pt. 1 also has that swimmy almost danceable vibe and is also strong.
Highly Suspicious is weird, a little off the rails, but there’s a charm to it. I am not going to reach for this song if I am in the mood to listen to this band, but I appreciate it’s quirkiness.
I’m Amazed is a much needed respite. After 3 songs that really stretch the band’s sound way out, this one sort of brings it home for a few minutes.
Thank You Too, Sec Walkin, Two Halves, Librarian, and Look At You are the soft spot on this album. None of them are very good and wouldn’t be too bad isolated, but together make for a sequence of the album that’s not very engaging.
Aluminum Park and Remnants turn the page on this and is some of the loudest rock the band has ever done. They are not the most profound songs from this band but they are both more than solid additions that clean up much of the mess of the middle part of the album.
Smokin’ From Shootin’ and Touch Me Pt. 2 ar top notch MMJ while still sounding remarkably different than what’s come before it.
So it’s an uneven album and probably their worst, but I never complain when I hear those songs played live, which sound much better than on the album.
My current MMJ album rankings based upon the high I still have from the show:
It Still Moves Z At Dawn My Morning Jacket The Waterfall 2 Circuital The Waterfall Tennessee Fire Evil Urges
It Still Moves is my favorite, but Z and At Dawn could be interchangeable. I haven't spent much time with The Waterfall 2 and self-titled, but i've seen some live performances with some of those tracks and really enjoyed them. They're obviously a whole different beast live than on record with a lot of stuff.
I have a huge appreciation for Circuital. One of those albums also that I appreciated more seeing them play the songs live, but even before that I have loved that album from the jump (the last third of the album did take me a little time to properly appreciate). I am now pretty much in the camp that I could make a pretty full throated defense of any of their albums, including some of the obscure stuff they’ve released over the years.

I love love love Movin’ Away.
Listened to The Waterfall II some and really enjoying it.

I really enjoy Circuital. I'd put it number 4.

We got Steam Engine
Nice! I didn’t get it at mine but have seen it at previous shows. Really hard to top that song in concert.
I actually am not the biggest fan of Waterfall 2. The first Waterfall album was really good. And I love Self-titled. I got “Never in the Real World” at my show this time and it was glorious.
Steam Engine is probably my favorite MMJ song It's a religious experience to me. I was so glad to get Steam Engine, Anytime and The Way that He Sings. A few I could do without, but a good setlist overall - https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/my-morni ... 0427a.html
It says a lot to me about how great MMJ live is that typically for months after I see Pearl Jam I get into a tailspin where that’s all I listen to - this time after having seen both bands in a week, it’s MMJ that I am in the tailspin on. Granted if I could have only seen either the Pearl Jam MSG show I saw this year or the MMJ set, I would still pick the Pearl Jam one without question - but the fact that it’s MMJ’s music that is lingering for me says a lot.
About halfway in, and so far sounds great. This release really kicks starting with Magic Bullet. The reinterpretation of If All Else Fails as a jangly tune lends a whole new appreciation in the midst of an At Dawn run of songs. Masterplan is killer.
