I absolutely love 'Hold Me Up' too. It's easily top 5 Live material. Still blows me away that this was never released on anything. Also, it makes that sex scene in Zack and Miri!
It's top 5 for sure, but I'm always surprised by how well known and loved this song is by people outside the Live fan community.
In 2008 I unearthed a different remaster of the track superior to anything else being shared at the same (though inferior to JWB's remaster included here ) and uploaded it to mediafire - at last count it had been downloaded 24,572 times
Apparently the band didn't want it released on the Zack and Miri soundtrack - presumably because they know what a hit it could be and wanted to release it themselves.
It's the 20th anniversary of Throwing Copper this year so fingers crossed it's featured on a deluxe edition - would be not only a good move for fans but financially too...
Kevin Smith asked them for Hold Me Up for MALLRATS in 1995 and the band said no, supposedly because they were saving it for their next album
I wouldn't hold your breath for any sort of TC reissue, or any sort of release featuring the original 4 members...it would just turn into another lawsuit over money
With the 90's Rock thread going strong I thought I'd bump this to let anyone who cares that Live have just released their first album since the departure of Ed Kowalczyk (produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, who also did 3 of their first 4 albums including Throwing Copper).
It's nothing ground-breaking and kind of sounds like it was teleported here from the 90's, but it certainly a lot better than anything Ed K has released recently and most Live's output this millennium.
Here's the first single which has a none-too-subtle nod to 'I Alone' in the bridge:
A frank recent interview about the split with Ed and recruiting Chris Shinn here:
"I'll admit, after the first four Live albums, I kind of stopped listening," says Chris Shinn, a 40-year-old singer/songwriter who grew up a big fan of Pennsylvania post-grunge giants Live. Nothing particularly outrageous about that statement on the face of it. Except Chris Shinn is the new lead singer of... Live. "Well, to be honest," replies the band's guitarist and founder member Chad Taylor, "We stopped listening too."

WCT’s reveal as a Live fan is one of the more surprising RM reveals I’ve witnessed
I'm from Pennsylvania, so I could not escape this album in 1994.
It was also refreshing to hear (some of) these songs on the radio amongst all the other stuff that was being played at the time. So I have a nostalgic attatchment to it.
But that's just me.
I'm not a huge fan and I only know the first 2 albums.

I loved Throwing Copper when it came out. I went to college that year in Erie, PA and tried to listen to Mental Jewelry and like it. Then I joined the Army and Secret Samadhi came out and don't get me wrong, there are some good/great songs on it but it was...too dark? And as dark as that was, The Distance to Here was too light. I doubt I listened to V more than a handful of times, and I never bothered with Birds of Pray.

I listened to these guys a lot in the '90's. But "Throwing Copper" is the only one that holds up as anything resembling a good album. For some reason I threw on "The Distance to Here" earlier this year and it sounded absolutely terrible.

i liked some of Throwing Copper, but pretty much lost all interest after that. i can't believe there's enough material from this band for 10 cds of rarities.
