This brings up a question I've had on my mind for a while now; Aside from actually listening, is there a way to discern whether or not a newer release of a record was mastered for vinyl?
Not really, other than looking for what people are saying about it on forums and, like Oh, Jimmy said above, sticking with bands and labels that have a reputation for putting out good sounding stuff.
If you're serious about finding the best pressing of a certain record, I recommend checking out http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/
But like I said previously, a lot of new records need to be cleaned before first listen. The manufacturing process creates a lot of dust/debris that can settle in the grooves. I at least go with a quick brushing before playing new vinyl.

I have an MP3 download card for The Mountain Goats' "Heretic Pride" that came with my LP. First person to PM me gets it! (if you recently got one of my download codes, let someone else have a shot!)

I'm putting off buying anymore old Neil records because I'm sure they'll all be repressed at some point. But I do have Zuma and it's awesome.
I bought the reissues of Harvest and S/T and they are fantastic replacements to my over-played original pressings, but quite pricey. The great thing about Neil is that you know you'll get a dedicated vinyl-specific remastering. We were talking about this before in terms of waiting, but if you are looking for any of the 80's albums the originals are really easy to find at a decent price.
As for 1990-2005 I'm not sure if/when we can expect to see reissues but some are still easily attainable while others are impossible. The 90's albums are extremely pricey and apparently many of them are now bootlegged: 1990 Ragged Glory 1992 Harvest Moon (many bootlegs on eBay) 1994 Sleeps with Angels 1995 Mirror Ball 1995 Dead Man (soundtrack) (bootlegs are showing up on eBay for this too) 1996 Broken Arrow (many bootlegs on eBay)
2000 Silver & Gold (I got this recently for around $20 new/sealed) 2002 Are You Passionate? (pricey but I got it for under $100) 2003 Greendale (forget about it) 2005 Prairie Wind (can be had around $50 on eBay)
