I sympathize. I'm trying to help correct his course so he may be able to make friends before it's too late.

Also, Brian Fallon should have stopped making music after The '59 Sound.

Everything he's touched since then is pure garbage.

So good.

Yup. It's great.

Mark's doucheyness and prolific output (which has become increasingly mediocre/bad after Benji) has really put a damper on my view of his work.

But there's no doubt that RHPs was an incredible band.

Yeah, I have no interest in anything post Benji (and he's an absolute douche). But during RHP and early SKM he might be one of my all time favorites songwritters.

I fell off after No Flashlight (2005), though I did get Mt. Eerie Parts 6&7 (2007) just to see how he extended the original album. What's your take on everything that came after? I wasn't too into the "black metal" stuff he was doing, and I was just scared by the prospect of his recent album about the death of his wife.

I honestly have no clue about mostly anything Phil Elverun other than this.
I jumped on the wagon because "A Crow Looked At Me" was so huge, and while it was a way too tough of a listen for me, it intrigued me enough to get into this album which seems to be his most acclaimed one. I'm completely in love with it. I'll probably listen to "Mount Eerie" or the new one next, unless you suggest something else.

I own the following by him:

As The Microphones
Don't Wake Me Up
It Was Hot, We Stayed In the Water
The Glow Pt 2
Mount Eerie
Don't Smoke/Get Off the Internet (7" single)

As Mount Eerie
No Flashlight
Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie
Mount Eerie Parts 6&7

I think The Glow Pt 2 is his best, and then I'd suggest checking out:
Mount Eerie
No Flashlight
Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie (this is sort a minor one, but it flows nicely)

You can safely skip his earlier stuff unless you become completely enamored. He started experimenting with so-called black metal on No Flashlight (imagine the heavy intro to "The Glow pt 2" -- the song, not the album -- but a little heavier and darker), and then I think he focused almost exclusively on that sound for the next couple albums, which is where he sort of lost me.

And then another GREAT record worth checking out is Karl Blau's Beneath Waves, which I *think* was produced by Elverum? It was definitely recorded at Dub Narcotic, and plays almost like a more straight-forward pop companion album to The Glow Pt. 2.

Looks like I'll have some work to do.

I am super not into black metal but absolutely love thre sound of the intro of "The Glow Pt. 2", I might get into the latter albums after I'm more acquainted with the ones you listed.

I really like Handwritten and The Horrible Crowes - Elsie.
